How white skin evolved in Europeans: Incredible map reveals how pale complexions only became the norm 1,700 years ago

New research suggests that pale complexions are a relatively recent addition to the continent.

A study by the University of Ferrara in Italy, analyzing ancient DNA from 348 individuals, reveals that pale skin became widespread in Europe much later than previously believed—only 1,700 years ago. Prior to this, darker skin was predominant, even during the Roman Empire. The research, supported by a detailed map, shows that lighter skin tones gradually increased, particularly in Northern and Central Europe during the Iron Age, as an adaptation to lower UV radiation levels, facilitating vitamin D production. This finding challenges earlier assumptions about the timeline of skin color evolution in Europe.
