Income tax shock: London and South East now pay more than rest of England put together

The bill for the two regions has jumped above £108 billion a year

In 2022/23, London and the South East paid more income tax (£108.4 billion) than the rest of England combined (£105.8 billion). Kensington and Chelsea's income tax revenue (£5.2 billion) was close to that of the entire North East (£5.5 billion). The freeze on income tax thresholds until 2027/28 will likely increase the number of people paying basic or higher rates.
