Income tax shock: London's bill hits nearly £64 billion a year

The bill for the two regions has jumped above £108 billion a year

In 2022/23, London's income tax bill reached £63.8 billion, with London and the South East collectively contributing £108.4 billion, exceeding the total from the rest of England. The freeze on income tax thresholds until 2027/28 will likely increase the number of people paying higher rates. Kensington and Chelsea paid the most income tax of any local authority. Chancellor Rachel Reeves is expected to address public spending cuts in the upcoming Spring Statement.
