Influenza is hitting hard. Data shows fewer Canadians got their flu shot

Most provinces and at least one territory report declines in people getting their flu shot compared to last year, with doctors warning of the strain it could pose to hospitals.

Influenza is significantly impacting Canada, with over 11,790 cases and 103 outbreaks reported. Flu vaccination rates have dropped by 1-4% across provinces and territories, attributed to factors like vaccine fatigue, access issues, and perceptions that the flu is not severe. The vaccine reduces the risk of needing medical care by 53% and helps prevent severe illness and hospitalization. As of February 25, 2024, 104 flu-related deaths have been reported, though vaccination status of those deceased is unspecified.
