The winding network of tunnels is believed to be home to the Chinese army's secretive strategic missile unit, the group in charge of maintaining and, if necessary, launching, Xi Jinping's ICBMs.
China has constructed a 3,100-mile network of underground tunnels, dubbed the "Underground Great Wall," to house and protect its intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). The tunnels, located deep beneath mountains, are designed to withstand attacks and allow for retaliatory strikes. China's strategic missile unit maintains these Dongfeng missiles, and while the exact number of nuclear weapons is undisclosed, estimates suggest around 500 missiles. State media footage shows troops and workers within the tunnel system, highlighting its purpose: "Strive to build a position capable of fighting and winning battles".
