Intervene In Benue Judiciary Crisis Now, CSOs Tell Federal Gov’t

A coalition of civil society organizations (CSOs) under the Coalition for Good Governance and Transparency in Nigeria (CGGTN) has demanded urgent intervention from the National Judicial Council (NJC) and the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, in the Benue State judiciary crisis. The crisis involves allegations against Chief Judge Maurice Ikpambese, including misconduct, bias, and compromise. The Benue State House of Assembly removed Ikpambese, prompting the CSOs to issue a 48-hour ultimatum for the NJC to investigate and act. They threaten mass protests at NJC premises if no action is taken. The CSOs also urge the Benue State Governor to appoint the next judge in line as Acting Chief Judge, emphasizing constitutional provisions for judicial removal.
