Israeli spyware may have been used by Ontario police, report alleges
A Citizen Lab report suggests the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) may have used Israeli spyware "Graphite" from Paragon Solutions, tracing an IP address to the OPP's headquarters. Graphite, which targets instant messaging apps, has been found on devices of journalists and activists worldwide. While the OPP hasn't confirmed or denied using Graphite, they state that interception of communications requires judicial authorization and is used for serious investigations. Researchers also found suspected Graphite deployments at other Ontario addresses. The RCMP acknowledged using similar spyware tools in the past for serious criminal and national security investigations, with judicial authorization.
