Just 3% of domestic abusers charged after victim driven to suicide, figures show

Assistant commissioner Louisa Rolfe said she expects more perpetrators to be charged with manslaughter despite ‘challenges’ proving abuse caused a death

A report reveals that only 3% of domestic abusers are charged after their victims commit suicide, despite the number of abuse-related suicides exceeding domestic homicides for the second year. From April 2023 to March 2024, 98 victims took their own lives following domestic abuse, compared to 80 killed by partners. Police acknowledge missed patterns of abuse and are implementing new guidance to investigate domestic abuse history in unexpected deaths, but face challenges in proving causation. Victims' families are calling for greater accountability and support.
