JUST IN: Tinubu receives Sierra Leone President, Bio, at Villa

President Bola Tinubu hosted Sierra Leonean President Julius Bio at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja on March 3, 2025. Bio arrived at 12:22 pm accompanied by the bagpipers of the Presidential Guards Brigade and was received by Tinubu's Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, before entering a closed-door meeting. The two countries have maintained strong diplomatic ties since their independences in 1960 and 1961, respectively. Nigeria played a key role in supporting Sierra Leone during its civil war (1991-2002) by leading the ECOWAS Monitoring Group and aiding the restoration of the democratically elected government after a 1997 coup. In 1999, the UN Mission in Sierra Leone was deployed to assist in disarmament and peace-building. Recent trade data shows Nigeria's exports to Sierra Leone valued at approximately $5.55 million in 2023, while Sierra Leone's main exports to Nigeria include animal and vegetable fats, machinery, rubber products, and fish.
