Kenny MacAskill named new Alba Party leader following sudden death of Alex Salmond

Alba currently has just one MSP and no MPs with the fledgling party left fighting for attention in Scotland's crowded political scene.

Kenny MacAskill has been elected as the new leader of the Alba Party, succeeding the late Alex Salmond. MacAskill won 52% of the vote against Ash Regan, the party's sole MSP. Following the announcement, former Alba general secretary Chris McEleny, who claims he was unfairly dismissed, announced he would be taking legal action against the party. MacAskill aims to galvanise the pro-independence movement and achieve a breakthrough in the upcoming Holyrood election.
