Kirsty Coventry elected IOC president and is first woman, first African to lead

The Zimbabwe sports minister and two-time Olympic swimming gold medalist got a stunning first-round win in the seven-candidate contest after voting by nearly 100 of her colleagues in the IOC membership on Thursday.



Kirsty Coventry, Zimbabwe's sports minister and two-time Olympic swimming gold medalist, was elected IOC president on March 20, 2025, becoming the first woman and first African to hold the position. She won in the first round of a seven-candidate contest and will succeed Thomas Bach on June 23. Her tenure will involve navigating political and sporting issues leading up to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and finding a host for the 2036 Summer Games.
