La justice maintient l’abolition d’une circonscription fédérale au Québec

The Federal Court has upheld the abolition of the federal electoral district of Avignon–La Mitis–Matane–Matapédia in Quebec. In his ruling, Judge Sébastien Grammond found that the reasons provided by the independent commission responsible for redistricting were reasonable and aligned with the principles set out by the Supreme Court. The commission argued that the district’s population was nearly 36% below the provincial average, making its retention unreasonable. The court also noted that the redistricting process must adapt to population changes, and maintaining the status quo was incompatible with the requirements of the *Constitution Act, 1867*. The plaintiffs, including Droits collectifs Québec and Alexis Deschênes, had argued that the new district of Gaspésie–Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine–Listuguj was too large for effective representation, but the court dismissed these claims. The plaintiffs were ordered to pay $6,000 to the Attorney General of Canada and $2,000 to Elections Canada to cover their legal costs.
