Widespread coral bleaching has been documented at Western Australia's Ningaloo Reef, with conservationists warning that large areas of corals could die in the coming weeks. The bleaching, caused by an extreme marine heatwave, has been described as a 'red-alert moment' for the reef. This is the second bleaching event at Ningaloo in two years, with the last occurring in 2022. Experts warn that the frequency of such events, driven by climate change, is outpacing the ability of corals to recover, posing an existential threat to marine ecosystems and coastal industries reliant on a healthy marine environment.
