President Luis Abinader has reported significant reductions in poverty during his nearly five years in office. Between 2023 and 2024, the general poverty rate decreased from 23% to 18.98%, a 4.02 percentage point drop, and the extreme poverty rate fell from 3.24% to 2.44%. By the fourth quarter of 2024, general poverty stood at 17.21%, and extreme poverty at 1.95%. Over 440,000 people have been lifted out of poverty, and 80,000 out of extreme poverty. Abinader attributes these reductions to measures such as increasing the minimum wage, programs like Oportunidad 14-24, scholarships, income transfers, and INFOTEP's dual training programs. He aims to reduce general poverty to 15% by 2028 and eradicate extreme poverty.
