Medal from King recognises work in Gaza is ‘valuable’, says NHS medic

The recipients of the new honour received their Humanitarian Medals at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

The King presented Humanitarian Medals to NHS medic Dr. Matthew Newport and 13 other frontline medical responders at Buckingham Palace for their work in Gaza. Dr. Newport, who worked in Gaza five times over the last year, described the conditions as "apocalyptic" and called the medal a recognition of the "valuable" work done by local Palestinian staff. UK-Med, the British emergency medical charity supporting the effort, has treated over 300,000 people in Gaza and highlighted the ongoing medical crisis there. Other recipients included Paula Tobin, an NHS emergency nurse, and Nick Cairns, a former British Army officer, who were also honored for their roles in medical relief in Gaza. The medals were also awarded to individuals involved in humanitarian responses to crises in Morocco and Libya. UK-Med's CEO, David Wightwick, emphasized the critical role of the medics in global emergency response.
