More Loblaw employees to wear body cams following pilot project at Abbotsford Shoppers

The company said it will be increasing the use of body cameras from two to 11 stores in B.C. to help reduce violent incidents

Loblaw is expanding its body camera pilot program from two to 11 stores in British Columbia due to early results suggesting they may reduce violent incidents. The cameras are activated only when employees feel their safety or others is at risk and are worn by trained staff who volunteer. The expansion, which also includes other provinces, aims to evaluate the long-term impact of the cameras. Concerns have been raised regarding informed consent and the necessity of body cameras beyond existing CCTV systems, with some citing the need to protect retail employees from escalating violence and a perceived lack of judicial protection.
