New collaboration to tackle health inequalities launches in South Lanarkshire

The council and community planning partners will work to reduce health inequalities and improve wellbeing in communities

A new collaboration, the Collaboration for Health Equity in Scotland (CHES), has launched in South Lanarkshire to address health inequalities and improve community wellbeing. The initiative, inspired by the work of Professor Sir Michael Marmot and previously successful in England and Wales, aims to reduce health disparities and enhance life expectancy. Local authorities, Public Health Scotland (PHS), and the UCL Institute of Health Equity (IHE) will collaborate to strengthen local plans and address social determinants of health, such as housing, environment, and discrimination. The project will focus on the Marmot Eight Principles, including ensuring a healthy standard of living, preventing ill health, and promoting environmental sustainability. A launch event in Hamilton highlighted the collaboration’s ambition to create a healthier, more equitable Scotland, with lessons learned informing national strategies.
