Nigeria, ITU, Others Brainstorm On Submarine Cable Resilience

Nigeria, in collaboration with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), Portugal, and other stakeholders, convened the ITU International Submarine Cable Resilience Summit in Abuja to address submarine cable disruptions and enhance resilience. Nigeria's Minister of Communications, Bosun Tijani, highlighted the critical role of submarine cables, which carry over 95% of international traffic, and emphasized the need for global collaboration to mitigate risks like natural disasters and human activities. ITU's Secretary-General, Doreen Bogdan-Martin, stressed the importance of innovation and investment in undersea networks, noting the launch of a new advisory body to improve cable deployment and repairs. Prof. Sandra Maximiano from Portugal underscored the need for regulatory measures to protect vulnerable regions. The summit aimed to strengthen digital infrastructure and foster global cooperation for a resilient digital economy.
