A Transportation Safety Board of Canada report found the crew of the Elite Navigator, a Newfoundland fishing vessel that sank in July 2024, followed proper safety practices. The vessel carried more safety equipment than required, and the crew regularly discussed emergency scenarios and demonstrated safety training during the incident. While the crew battled a fire, distress calls via VHF radio were unsuccessful due to distance, and a medium-frequency radio telephone, which could have had a longer range, wasn't used. The report suggests optimal design and training for carbon dioxide fire suppression systems when fitted on fishing vessels.
