All of Ireland’s cities and larger towns need positive urban planning. That needs a revolution in government thinking
Dublin exhibits a high level of urban decay and dereliction that would be unacceptable in other European cities. Local authorities, despite having compulsory purchase order (CPO) powers for redevelopment, are ineffective. Examples include stalled O'Connell Street renewal plans, the derelict Ormond Hotel site, and a decaying property block acquired for the Abbey Theatre expansion. The city prioritizes projects like bus lanes while neglecting the deteriorating urban fabric.
