There was a time not long ago that the exercise mantra in gyms was “no pain, no gain.”
The fitness industry has shifted from the "no pain, no gain" mentality to prioritize recovery. Tony Horton, who popularized the phrase, now advocates for rest and recovery methods like sleep, cold baths, foam rolling, and saunas. While some discomfort during workouts is acceptable, sharp pain should be avoided. Horton recommends allowing 48 hours of recovery for muscles and highlights mindfulness and meditation as additional recovery practices.
