Only 25 countries in the world are fully functioning democracies

The new Democracy Index for 2024 suggests global democracy in decline despite a year full of elections worldwide



A new study by the EIU's Democracy Index 2024 reveals a decline in global democracy, with only 6% of the world's population living in full democracies, a decrease from the previous year. Out of 167 countries, 25 are classified as full democracies, excluding the US, which is designated as a flawed democracy. The UK ranks 17th, scoring 8.34 out of 10, with lower scores in political culture and functioning government. The study warns potential changes in the US's democracy score
