Ontario system ‘not ready’ to introduce involuntary addictions treatment

Ontario's mental health and addictions minister says the government isn't in a place to consider involuntary treatment because the current system is already under too much stress.

Ontario's mental health and addictions minister, Michael Tibollo, stated the province is not ready to consider involuntary addictions treatment due to an already strained system and lack of adequate resources to meet current demand. He aims to overhaul the system to ensure accessible services within a week, prioritizing local support. Mayors have been urging the government to address the addiction crisis, including considering involuntary treatment, but Tibollo believes the system needs to be strengthened before such measures can be considered and that new legislation would be required.
