
It comes a day after the Hungarian leader refused to endorse an EU statement on support for Kyiv that was backed by the bloc’s 26 other leaders.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced a non-binding "national consultation" to poll citizens on Ukraine's potential EU membership, citing economic concerns and the need for Hungary's approval. Orban, considered close to Putin and a supporter of Trump, has repeatedly warned he could veto Ukraine's EU bid, which requires unanimous EU approval.
