Patients urged to be cautious of surgical tourism special offers

Experts have published new guidance on best practice for travelling abroad for care.

Experts warn against medical tourism 'special offers' for weight loss procedures, citing concerns over substandard care and potential risks to patient safety. Reports of poor treatment and even deaths have prompted the development of safe practice guidelines for bariatric and metabolic surgery tourism. Recommendations include consulting a home doctor before traveling, ensuring surgeries are performed at accredited centers, and requiring follow-up care for at least two years. The guidelines also advise against offering bariatric surgery to individuals with a BMI below 30 and exclude medical tourists from research studies. These measures aim to improve safety and prevent harm in the medical tourism sector.
