Poll: Decline of Christianity in U.S. Slowing, Possibly Leveling Off

A poll by Pew Research suggests that the decline of Christianity in the U.S. may be slowing and possibly leveling off. The Pew Religious Landscape Study found that 62% of respondents identify as Christian, while 29% are religiously unaffiliated. The Christian share of the population, which had been declining since 2007, has been relatively stable since 2019. Among Christians, 40% identified as Protestant, 19% as Catholic, and 3% as other Christians. Non-Christian religions, including Muslims (1.2%), Buddhists (1.1%), and Hindus (0.9%), make up 7.1% of the population, with Jews being the largest non-Christian religious group at 1.7%. The number of religiously unaffiliated Americans, often referred to as "nones," has leveled off at 29%. Pew attributes the long-term trend to generational replacement, with older, more religious generations being replaced by younger, less religious generations.
