Power appears to have returned to Heathrow but airport remains closed

The airport announced early on Friday it would be closed until 11.59pm because of a fire at a nearby electrical substation.

Heathrow Airport remains closed until at least 11:59 PM Friday due to a fire at a nearby electrical substation, despite power being restored. The closure has affected approximately 200,000 passengers and over 1,350 flights. Disruption is expected to last for several days. The fire, which occurred Thursday night, forced diversions of around 120 aircraft. National Grid and SSEN Distribution worked to restore power. Thousands of homes were also affected by the outage. Some flights were diverted to Gatwick and Shannon airports.
