Pregnant women who develop diabetes should cut calories to avoid insulin – study

Researchers suggested the method could benefit an estimated 13,000 women annually if rolled out nationally.

A study suggests that pregnant women with gestational diabetes can reduce their need for insulin by following a reduced-calorie diet. The trial, involving 425 women with a BMI over 25, tested two diets (2,000 and 1,200 calories daily) and found that those on the lower-calorie diet were less likely to require insulin. Researchers estimate that nationally, this approach could benefit up to 13,000 women annually. The study, published in *Nature Medicine*, highlights the potential for healthier pregnancies and reduced risks of complications such as high birth weight and cesarean deliveries. Women on the reduced-calorie diet also experienced improved blood sugar levels and blood pressure. The findings were funded by Diabetes UK and emphasize the importance of addressing gestational diabetes to prevent long-term health risks for mothers and babies.
