Liviu Cristian Negoiță, the mayor of Cernavodă, was sentenced to four years in prison for embezzlement. He approved 33 unauthorized payments totaling over 9.3 million lei to the sports club Axiopolis Sport Cernavodă between April 2017 and August 2019. The court in Constanța ruled on February 7, 2024, confiscating the funds for the state, banning Negoiță from public office for four years, and ordering him to pay 12,000 lei in court costs. The verdict is appealable within ten days. The local council did not seek compensation, and Negoiță was prosecuted by the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) since November 2022.
