Professor Emeritus Gerald Schneider, discoverer of the “two visual systems,” dies at 84

Professor Gerald Schneider, a Professor Emeritus at MIT, passed away at the age of 84. Renowned for his discovery of the "two visual systems," Schneider was a leading authority on brain structure and behavior. His research, using Syrian golden hamsters, significantly advanced neuroscience, particularly with his 1969 Science paper detailing how one visual system locates objects and the other identifies them. This work influenced later studies on primate brain pathways. Schneider, who joined MIT in 1967, remained involved in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences even after retiring in 2017. His dedication to teaching and research left a lasting legacy at MIT.
