Racism seen as permeating all aspects of Roma and Traveller lives in Ireland, European report finds

Commissioner says he was ‘struck by consensus’ that ‘structural’ racism hinders access to basic rights

A Council of Europe report found structural racism permeates all aspects of Roma and Traveller lives in Ireland, hindering access to basic rights. The report recommends culturally appropriate housing, legal aid for discrimination cases, and increased Roma/Traveller representation in teaching to address bullying and racism. It also highlights over-representation of Travellers in the prison system and under-reporting of domestic violence due to perceived Garda bias. The government responded by stating it will give careful attention to the report.
