Rivers emergency rule: Presidency faults Jonathan, Soyinka for condemning Fubara, lawmakers’ suspension

In March 2025, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Fubara, his deputy, and state lawmakers, citing governance breakdown due to conflict and attacks on oil facilities. The National Assembly approved the decision. Former President Jonathan and Nobel Laureate Soyinka condemned the suspension of elected officials, with Jonathan citing abuse of power and Soyinka calling it against the spirit of federalism. The Presidency responded, stating their opinions were personal, referencing a Supreme Court ruling regarding the functionality of the Rivers State government. Stakeholders including the PDP governors, NBA, NLC, SANs, and CSOs also opposed the emergency rule.
