Rome’s buses, metro under fire as Holy Year tourists flock to city

Services are often late and there are problems with lifts and security

Italy's competition authority has launched an investigation into Rome's public transport operator, Atac, over allegations of substandard service between 2021 and 2023, including issues with punctuality, escalator and lift functionality, and security guard provision. The probe was initiated due to "possible unfair commercial practices." Rome's metro system is undergoing upgrades, but the Catholic Holy Year, expected to attract up to 32 million tourists, has exacerbated pressure on the city's infrastructure. Past incidents include escalator malfunctions and buses catching fire.
