The Oscar-winning actor and his classical pianist wife were found dead at their home in Santa Fe last month
In March 2025, authorities investigating the deaths of Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa discovered Arakawa called a Santa Fe medical service, Cloudberry Health, on February 12, inquiring about an "esoteric treatment." This contradicts the initial belief that she died on February 11, the last day she was seen in public. Arakawa's cause of death was determined to be hantavirus, while Hackman likely died on February 18. A clause in her will states that if the couple died within 90 days of each other, it would be considered a simultaneous death and all her assets would be donated to charity.
