Santorini waits as earthquake swarm leaves island tourism on shaky ground

Santorini and nearby Greek islands remain on high alert after a surge in underwater earthquakes this month, with a state of emergency declared for Santorini, Ios, Amorgos, and Anafi. Schools on the affected islands are in their third week of closure, and the Greek government has announced plans for an emergency port facility on Santorini to prepare for potential large-scale evacuations. Greece's chief seismologist noted that while the islands are monitoring seismic activity, including ground deformation, gas emissions, and satellite data, Santorini's dormant volcano does not currently pose a threat. Earthquakes of up to magnitude 5.1 were recorded recently in the area.
