Scientists reveal cause of deadly storms which battered UK in space of a week

Researchers says the finding could help forecasters identify any increased risk of storm clusters up to a month before they happen.

Scientists found that a strong "swirling polar vortex" miles above Earth caused the deadly storms Dudley, Eunice, and Franklin that battered the UK in February 2022, leaving 1.4 million households without electricity and resulting in four deaths. The strong SPV increased the likelihood of intense storms affecting the UK and Northern Europe and the probability of three or more storms hitting the UK within a week.
