Nicola Sturgeon, former First Minister of Scotland and MSP since 1999, announced she will step down as MSP and will not seek re-election in May 2026. Sturgeon cited a desire to embrace new opportunities. Her decision follows her resignation as First Minister in March 2023 and a challenging period for the SNP, including a police investigation into party finances. While reflecting on her career, Sturgeon highlighted policies such as the Scottish Child Payment and her ongoing support for Scottish independence. Her successor, Humza Yousaf, also stepped down as First Minister and will not seek re-election in 2026.
