Scotland's unique Pancake Day history including why Scots call it Bannock Night

Pancake Day has been celebrated across the globe for centuries, but Scotland was once practiced rather different traditions

Scotland's Pancake Day, known as Shrove Tuesday, has a unique history in Scotland, where it was traditionally called Bannock Night. Unlike the pancake tradition elsewhere, Scots historically made and ate bannocks, a type of flatbread made from oatmeal, eggs, and milk or beef stock, cooked on a griddle. The day also featured customs like pouring batter, sharing bannocks, and creating a "dreaming bannock" with charms, believed to predict future spouses. This year, Shrove Tuesday falls on March 4, 2024, later than usual due to Easter's later date.
