Sebastian Coe secures only eight votes as Kirsty Coventry elected IOC president

Coventry secured the absolute majority necessary for victory in the very first round.



Kirsty Coventry won the IOC presidential election, becoming the first female and first African president. The Zimbabwean sports minister and former Olympic swimmer won in the first round with 51% of the vote, beating six other candidates, including Seb Coe and Juan Antonio Samaranch. She was considered the favorite of outgoing president Thomas Bach. She will assume office on June 23 for an eight-year term.
