St Vincent and the Grenadines purchased Baliceaux, an island of great historical and cultural significance to the Garifuna people. In 1796, British forces marooned approximately 5,000 Garifuna on the island, where nearly half died from starvation and disease. Activists campaigned for the island to be designated as a heritage site. The Garifuna community celebrates this acquisition as a "historic victory."
