Stash of 15th century coins discovered by metal detectorists in Scottish Borders

A haul of 30 silver and gold Scottish and English coins was unearthed in the Cappercleuch area.

A stash of 30 rare 15th-century coins, including Scottish and English silver and gold pieces, was discovered by metal detectorists Keith Young and Lisa Stephenson in the Cappercleuch area of the Scottish Borders in early November. The coins, which include English silver groats from King Henry V and King Edward IV, and Scottish gold demys and half-demys from Kings James I and II, were announced by the Treasure Trove Unit on Wednesday. Archaeologists excavated the site, recovering five additional coins. The coins are believed to have been deposited in the early to mid-1460s. The Treasure Trove Unit will assess the find, and the Scottish Archaeological Finds Allocation Panel will assign a monetary value, which will be paid to the finders.
