Stiftung Warentest: Private Krankenversicherungen – „Viele leisten sogar weniger als gesetzliche Krankenkassen“
Stiftung Warentest evaluated 1,245 private health insurance plans in Germany and found that two-thirds (861) were not recommended due to high deductibles or gaps in coverage. Many plans offered less coverage than statutory health insurance, particularly in areas like psychotherapy, palliative care, post-accident orthodontics, and digital health services. The foundation advises thorough comparison shopping, cautioning against rising costs in old age, and considering whether premiums justify benefits. Only 384 plans were recommended, and the study noted that private insurance may be suitable for a small, exclusive group, such as civil servants with subsidies or high-income earners, but not for everyone.
