Storm Éowyn’s €500m toll on Irish forestry revealed by satellite imagery

Licensed owners urged to quickly clear felled trees as equivalent of almost 2.5 times annual timber harvest brought down

Satellite imagery reveals Storm Éowyn caused approximately €500 million in damage to Irish forestry, felling an estimated 23,600-30,000 hectares (230.6-300 sq km), almost 2.5 times the annual timber harvest. Connacht was the worst-hit region. The damage is spread almost equally between public and private plantations and exceeds that of the previous record storm in 2014. Authorities are prioritizing felling licenses and considering foreign contractors to manage the unprecedented volume of felled timber.
