In March 2025, the Sudanese Army (SAF), led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, claimed to have recaptured Khartoum from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) after two years of civil war. While the SAF reports eliminating the last RSF base in Khartoum and preparing to move on the airport, analysts suggest the war is not over, as the RSF still holds significant territory in western Sudan. The conflict, marked by war crimes and a humanitarian crisis, began in 2023 after a falling-out between Burhan and RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.
