Tennis could have a fifth Grand Slam after ambitious £436m bid to buy tournament

The Italian Tennis and Padel Federation (FITP) have made a £436 million bid to acquire the Madrid Open, aiming to transform the Italian Open into a fifth Grand Slam. Currently, the sport has four Grand Slam tournaments: the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open. The FITP's goal is to free up the tennis calendar to establish the Italian Open as a Grand Slam, though challenges remain, such as scheduling conflicts with the French Open. The proposal comes amid increased interest in tennis in Italy, driven by the success of players like Jannik Sinner, who recently became the first Italian to reach world No. 1.
