The nun who tormented herself to death: Archaeologists uncover first female Christian figure believed to have bound herself in chains for eternal torture

The Antiquities Authority said that the discovery 'raised new questions' about how women of the time lived, potentially dressing up as men to be able to engage in religion

Archaeologists discovered a skeleton in the Levant, believed to be the first female Christian figure showing evidence of extreme self-flagellation. The woman, likely between 30 and 60 years old, was found bound with iron rings around her neck, arms, and legs, suggesting voluntary asceticism. Researchers compared the find to a chained male monk skeleton uncovered in the 1990s and noted historical accounts of women practicing similar self-torment.
