The painful road to Net Zero: Cut out two kebabs' worth of meat a week, drive an EV, install a heat pump and forget holidays abroad, says report

The Climate Change Committee said there needed to be around 1.5million heat pump installations a year in existing homes by 2035 - up from just 60,000 in 2023.

The UK's path to achieving Net Zero by 2050, as outlined by the Climate Change Committee, involves significant lifestyle changes for individuals, including reducing meat consumption by 25%, transitioning to electric vehicles, installing heat pumps, and cutting back on flights. The initiative is projected to cost £320 billion over 25 years, with costs peaking at £33 billion annually by 2029, followed by savings due to cheaper technology and efficiency. The report recommends 1.5 million heat pump installations annually by 2035 and 87% of cars and vans being electric by 2040. Critics have dismissed the recommendations as excessive and impractical, with some questioning the feasibility under current government policies. The goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 87% from 1990 levels by 2040.
