Venezuelan migrants handed over to Mexico like it’s a U.S. immigration detention facility
The U.S. has established agreements with several Latin American countries, including Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, and Panama, to serve as stopovers or destinations for deporting migrants. These deals, described as informal "handshake agreements" by researcher Adam Isacson of WOLA, aim to redirect migrant flows away from the U.S. border. Concerns have been raised about the treatment of deportees, with reports of poor conditions and lack of informed consent. Migrants are being transported to remote camps, such as in Panama and Costa Rica, and there are fears that vulnerable groups, including those from Iran and Afghanistan, may face increased risks. The U.S. has also resumed deportations to Mexico, with some migrants expressing confusion over their rights. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to shift migration dynamics in the region.
