This queer Toronto barbershop is changing lives one haircut at a time

In a humble, single-chair barbershop on Toronto's Danforth Avenue, haircuts are becoming moments of personal affirmation for queer and transgender clients. The Queer Barber is a QTBIPOC-owned (acronym for Queer, Trans, Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour) barbershop founded in 2022 by E (who uses all pronouns). The space was created with the singular purpose of offering gender-affirming haircuts in an environment where QTBIPOC and 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals can simply exist without explanation or fear of being misread. "I wanted to create the kind of space I never saw in the industry.
