Three skiers believed dead after being trapped by avalanche in Alaska

The slide happened late on Tuesday afternoon near the skiing community of Girdwood, located about 40 miles south of Anchorage

Three skiers were caught in an avalanche in Alaska's backcountry and are believed to be dead, according to Alaska State Troopers. The avalanche occurred around 3:30 p.m., burying the men 40 to 100 feet deep. Guides attempted rescue using avalanche beacons but were unable to recover them due to the depth and risk. No further operations were conducted due to safety concerns and limited daylight. Girdwood, the skiing capital of Alaska, sees significant avalanche risks. Nationally, 25-30 avalanche-related deaths occur annually, with recent fatalities in Colorado, Oregon, and Utah.
